No 165 Jacques-Louis David

“To give a body and a perfect form to one’s thoughts. This – and only this – is to be an artist.” Jacques-Louis David

At his Art History talk today, Tom Smith told us about David and his ‘The Death of Marat’. One of the points Tom made was about the large blank area at the top of the painting. I suspect I was alone in thinking ‘That would be great place for a quote to go!’

The painting, I believe, is currently on display at Tate Liverpool as part of Art Turning Left.

I agree – the quote fit perfectly into that upper area – and I actually like how you chose to have the quote only on the left – and not to over analyze the placement of the words here, but the quote visually aligns with the composition – and the orphaned word “artist” and then artist’s name placement aligns well with the subject’s right arm.
